What Is an ASO?
An Armed Security Officer (ASO) is a specially trained officer authorized by the Transportation Security Administration to fly armed aboard private and corporate aircraft. For qualifying operations under the DCA Access Standard Security Program (DASSP), an ASO is part of the required security framework for general aviation access to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The role exists within a federally controlled aviation-security program requiring appropriate qualifications, authorization, vetting, and specialized training. From pre-flight through arrival, the ASO is responsible for the security of the aircraft, crew, and passengers — professionally, discreetly, and without disrupting the flight experience.
